Description
Dogwood is well known for its stunning fall colors. However, several dogwood species produce unusual and attractive foliage before the leaves change. The “Summer Gold” dogwood (Cornus kousa “Summer Gold”) features bright green leaves edged in yellow that begin to turn from pink hues to flaming red in the fall. This attractive species develops white flowers in early spring. The variegated red twig dogwood (Cornus alba “Elegantissima”) produces grayish-green foliage with creamy white margins which look amazing against its blood red stems. The “Prairie Fire” dogwood (Cornus alba “Prairie Fire”) has bright golden leaves that fade to a pale yellow in the summer months. Once fall arrives, the foliage of “Prairie Fire” changes from pale yellow to striking red. Copyright MaryLeeParker
